Affordable Housing FAQs
Affordable housing refers to dwelling units, typically rental housing, that are financially within reach for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes. The concept of affordability is often quantified as housing costs that do not exceed 30% of a household’s income.
Eligibility for affordable housing varies based on factors such as income level, family size, and individual circumstances, often dictated by a combination of federal, state, and local regulations, as well as the specific policies of the housing provider or agency. Generally, it’s intended for individuals and families whose incomes aren’t enough to afford market-rate housing costs in their area, typically those earning 80% or less than the area median income (AMI) for their region.
Look up the area median income for your state and county.

VOA Southeast is dedicated to serving our community. As a nonprofit organization, we are actively engaged in developing, maintaining, and operating affordable housing units across the region. Our initiatives are designed not only to combat homelessness but also to promote long-term stability, community connection, and overall wellness.
Our programs cater to a wide range of individuals in need, including seniors, veterans, families facing economic challenges, those in substance abuse recovery, and persons with disabilities. Furthermore, VOA Southeast supports advocacy efforts, partners with public and private entities to secure funding and resources, and pushes for policy changes that make affordable housing more accessible and sustainable.
Making a difference starts with a single step. At VOA Southeast, we offer several pathways for individuals and groups to join our cause. Here’s how you can be part of the movement:
Make a Financial Contribution: Donations form the backbone of our ability to provide continuous, high-quality support to those in need. Every financial contribution, big or small, helps us to support services that ensure our residents’ well-being. You can make a one-time donation, become a monthly donor, or explore legacy giving options.
Advocate for Change: Beyond direct support, you can become a voice for the affordable housing movement. By advocating within your networks, initiating conversations, and spreading awareness about housing issues, you’re helping to build a society that recognizes housing as a human right. We also encourage contacting local representatives to express support for policies and funding that increase affordable housing options.
