Welcome Home: How a Renovated Residence is Enhancing Life for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

There is something special about coming home.

For several individuals served through VOA Southeast’s Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) programs, that feeling became a reality as they recently returned to a completely renovated group home designed to provide comfort, independence, and a vibrant place to thrive.

VOA Southeast proudly celebrated the grand re-opening of the home alongside residents, staff, supporters, and community members. The extensive renovation transformed the residence into a bright, welcoming space that reflects the dignity and value of the individuals who call it home.

A Home Reimagined

The renovation included a completely redesigned kitchen, updated bathrooms, refreshed living spaces, comfortable new furniture, and colorful décor throughout the home. A new activity room provides residents with dedicated space for recreation, learning, and social engagement, while the refreshed front porch and new swing offer a relaxing place to enjoy the outdoors and connect with neighbors and friends.

For resident Tina, moving back into the home was especially meaningful. Tina was among the residents who returned following the renovation and was all smiles as she explored the refreshed spaces designed with residents’ comfort and enjoyment in mind.

Adding to the significance of the day, Tina’s brother has been a longtime supporter and donor of VOA Southeast. His commitment to our mission reflects the deep trust families place in our organization to provide high-quality services and support for their loved ones.

More Than a Building

“This home represents far more than a building,” said Rob Rogers, President and CEO. “It reflects our commitment to creating a place where individuals are welcomed with dignity, surrounded by care, and given the opportunity to pursue their goals. More than renovated walls and new spaces, it is a community where people can experience warmth, belonging, and hope for the future.”

VOA Southeast serves more than 1,100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities annually across the Southeast through a comprehensive network of services that promote independence, connections, and quality of life. These services include:

  • Supportive residential housing
  • Community enrichment and day services
  • Supported employment opportunities

Every improvement made to this home was guided by a simple belief: every person deserves a safe, beautiful, and welcoming place to call home.

The grand re-opening was filled with smiles, laughter, and celebration as residents reconnected with familiar spaces made new again. Staff, family members, and supporters toured the renovated home, shared stories, and celebrated what this investment means for the individuals who will enjoy it for years to come.

The Difference a Home Can Make

As VOA Southeast continues its mission of serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, projects like this remind us that quality housing is about more than walls and furnishings. It is about creating opportunities for connection, independence, and joy.

We are grateful to the donors, supporters, staff, and community partners who help make transformations like this possible. Together, we are building more than homes—we are creating places where people can live, grow, and thrive.
