Honoring Veterans and Military Families This November
Every November, National Veterans and Military Families Month gives us an opportunity to recognize the men and women who served our country — and the families who served alongside them.
At VOA Southeast, that recognition is closely connected to the work we do every day.
For many veterans, returning to civilian life brings a new set of challenges. Finding steady employment can be difficult. Housing can become uncertain. Navigating benefits, healthcare and other resources can be overwhelming, especially when several of those challenges happen at once.
That’s where support can make a difference.
Across Alabama and Georgia, VOA Southeast works with veterans and their families through programs focused on housing stability, employment and access to the resources they have earned. Services include Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP), transitional and permanent housing, case management and connections to VA benefits and healthcare.
In 2025, VOA Southeast’s Veterans Services programs served 927 veterans. Among veterans exiting the SSVF program, 77% transitioned to permanent housing.
Those numbers matter because stability changes what comes next.
A safe place to live creates room to focus on employment. The right benefits can ease financial pressure. A job can restore independence and provide a path forward. And having someone there to help navigate the process can keep a temporary setback from becoming a crisis.
National Veterans and Military Families Month also recognizes the families behind those who served. Military service affects spouses, children and loved ones, and their support often continues long after active duty ends.
Veterans Day on November 11 gives us a day to say thank you. This month gives us a little more time to think about what honoring veterans looks like after the ceremonies are over.
For VOA Southeast, it means making sure veterans are treated with dignity and respect and have access to practical support when they need it.
This November, we recognize our nation’s veterans, their families and the people who continue to stand beside them at home.
