JESUS REPLIED, “LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND. THIS IS THE FIRST AND GREATEST COMMANDMENT. AND THE SECOND IS LIKE IT: LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”
Matthew 22:37-39
Author Robert Coleman tells the story of the day he was out in his yard gardening. It was a hot day. His 4-year-old son saw him out in the yard, and went and found an already used and dirty glass in the sink. He filled it with water from the faucet and, with delight and excitement, came running across the yard… water sloshing out of the glass as he ran. Then looking up to his father, he said, “Daddy, I thought you were thirsty, so I brought you a drink.”
Coleman later said, “I might have thought… couldn’t he do better than that. The water wasn’t cold, it wasn’t pure, and it was in a dirty glass. And I would have been right. But when I looked at his face, I saw pure love. He was doing the best he knew to please his Daddy.”
When we think about God and our service to Him, we need to remind ourselves that although we continually make errors in judgement and fall woefully short of our desire to be like Christ, still in our hearts we can strive to do the best we know to please Him.
Yes, we will make many mistakes along the way and sometimes painfully stumble and fall, but as best we know how, we can love God with all our hearts, with all our soul, and with all our mind… and love others as ourselves.
