Governor Kay Ivey Signs Proclamation Honoring Direct Support Professionals Across Alabama
Montgomery, Ala. — September 18, 2025 — Today, Governor Kay Ivey signed a gubernatorial proclamation recognizing Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, observed September 7–13, 2025.
The ceremony took place at the Alabama State Capitol.
Through this proclamation, Alabama recognizes the vital role Direct Support Professionals play in the state’s system of care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Each day, DSPs provide essential support. They promote independence. They also help individuals participate more fully in their communities.
Representatives from Volunteers of America Southeast were honored to attend the signing.
Attendees included Mary Powell, VOA Southeast’s DSP of the Year for Alabama Region 4, and Denise McCoy, a service recipient.
They joined fellow advocates, state partners, and DSP leaders from across Alabama for the ceremony.
“Direct Support Professionals are the heart of the services we provide,” said DeAnna Hattaway, Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Volunteers of America Southeast. “This proclamation is an important moment of recognition for a workforce whose compassion, skill, and dedication often go unseen, yet profoundly shape the lives of the individuals and families they serve.”
