Governor Kay Ivey Signs Proclamation Honoring Direct Support Professionals Across Alabama
Montgomery, Ala. — September 18, 2025 — Today, Kay Ivey signed a gubernatorial proclamation officially recognizing Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week, observed September 7–13, 2025, during a ceremony held at the Alabama State Capitol.
The proclamation affirms the vital role Direct Support Professionals play in Alabama’s system of care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities—providing daily support, promoting independence, and empowering individuals to fully participate in their communities.
Representatives from Volunteers of America Southeast were honored to attend the signing, including Mary Powell, VOA Southeast’s DSP of the Year for Alabama Region 4, and Denise McCoy, a service recipient, who joined fellow advocates, state partners, and DSP leaders from across Alabama for the ceremony.
“Direct Support Professionals are the heart of the services we provide,” said DeAnna Hattaway, Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Volunteers of America Southeast. “This proclamation is an important moment of recognition for a workforce whose compassion, skill, and dedication often go unseen, yet profoundly shape the lives of the individuals and families they serve.”
VOA Southeast also recognized DSPs of the Year representing regions across Alabama and Georgia:
- Alabama Region 1 – Kenneth Moore
- Alabama Region 2 – Shaunta Burris
- Alabama Region 3 – Rochelle Hudson
- Alabama Region 4 – Mary Powell
Each honoree exemplifies excellence in direct support through their commitment to person-centered care, dignity, and empowerment.
Volunteers of America Southeast proudly joins the State of Alabama in celebrating all Direct Support Professionals during DSP Recognition Week and extends its appreciation to every DSP whose daily work strengthens individuals, families, and communities throughout the state.
