Food Insecurity: It’s Closer to Home Than You Think

Food insecurity is not always easy to see. Sometimes it looks like a senior quietly skipping meals so there is enough money for medication. A veteran stretching a fixed income until the next check arrives. Or a family deciding whether to pay the electric bill, fill the gas tank, or buy groceries.

This is food insecurity: not having consistent, reliable access to enough nutritious food for a healthy, active life. It can mean worrying about the next meal, buying less nutritious food to stretch a budget, cutting portions, or going without.

According to Feeding the Gulf Coast, one in six people along the Gulf Coast faces food insecurity, including one in four children. Behind every statistic is a neighbor facing decisions no one should have to make.

For people already struggling to cover basic household expenses, even a modest increase in costs can create a crisis. Hunger does not wait for the holidays. But the holidays give us an opportunity to respond.

We See the Struggle Every Day

We don’t have to look far to find people facing food insecurity. We serve them every day:

  • Seniors. Older adults on fixed incomes may have to choose among housing, utilities, medication, and food; transportation and mobility can also limit access.
  • Veterans. Men and women who served our country may face housing instability, unemployment, or financial pressure while working toward stability.
People living with chronic mental illness. Reliable access to nutritious food can remove one more barrier to health and daily stability.
  • People with disabilities. Limited incomes and increasing food costs can put additional pressure on individuals, families, caregivers, and support networks.
  • Families and rural communities. Transportation challenges, limited local resources, and distance from food assistance can make a difficult situation even harder.

This is Our Moment to Care

Every bag of groceries and every donated food item represents more than a meal. It represents one less difficult decision for a family, one less burden for a senior, and one more way to stand beside a veteran, an individual with a disability, or a neighbor in need.

With FOX10, VOA Southeast, strategic partners, and the generosity of the Gulf Coast community, we can help food reach people who need it, including neighbors in communities too often overlooked.

Support 10 Caring Gifts Food Drive. Together, we can help take the choice between paying bills and putting food on the table off the table.
