Dedication, March 16
In 1979, the congregation of First Baptist Church Mobile began holding worship services at 1204 Hillcrest Road in a trailer on loan from the Alabama Baptist Convention.
It didn’t take long for the small congregation to establish its identity, and by 1983, Hillcrest Baptist Church was formed. That same year, nearly 5 acres of land was deeded from First Baptist and ground was broken for a new sanctuary.
Fast forward to 2015 … After 32 years of family, fellowship, and worship, Hillcrest Baptist Church was facing a declining membership. Looking for a way to continue a Christian Ministry, Volunteers of America Southeast (VOASE) moved its corporate office and faith based-ministry to 1204 Hillcrest Road. Today, VOASE is headquartered where the daycare and Sunday school rooms once were. The chapel, completely upgraded, hosts prayer services, events, and is used on a regular basis by churches in the community who do not have a worship venue.
In addition to the upgrades and renovations of Hillcrest Baptist Church, VOASE also built a Ministry Center behind the original structure. This 8,400 square foot building serves as a place for volunteers to gather to do special projects for the people VOASE serves. It is also equipped with a commercial kitchen, showers, and has room for cots in the event that volunteers are brought in to assist with rebuilding after a natural disaster.
“We are blessed beyond measure to have this property donated to us,” said Wallace T. Davis, CEO and President of VOASE. “Our impact on the community will significantly increase because of the good use of space we now have. We are forever grateful to Hillcrest Baptist Church for trusting us to continue their ministry.”
